1. Shunsuke Kubota, MD, PhD, was awarded the inaugural Robert Machemer Foundation Vitreoretinal Scholarship in 2013. Dr. Shunsuke was selected through a competitive application process, from among a group of outstanding international scholars studying at institutions across the US.   Dr. Kubota, received his MD from Kitasato University School of Medicine, Japan and his PhD from Keio University Graduate School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan and is a vitreoretinal research fellow at Washington St. Louis, mentored by Raj Apte, MD, PhD.  Dr. Kubota is studying the role of Sirt1 in age–related macular degeneration.

2. Yuji Ito, MD PhD, was awarded the second Robert Machemer Vitreoretinal Fellowship in 2014. Dr. Ito was selected from a group of outstanding applicants competing for the fellowship. Dr. Ito received his PhD in 2007 from Oita Medical University and his MD in 2001 also from Oita University. Dr. Ito is currently at the Cole Eye Institute of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and his project is "Intraoperative and Perioperative Analysis of Macular Hole Architectural Features and the Impact on Postoperative Functional and Anatomic Outcomes mentored by Justis P. Ehlers MD.
